In this edition of the SVC Podcast, SVC Contributing Editor Bennett Liles wraps up his talk with Buford Jones, tour liaison manager with Meyer Sound, about mixing live sound at the front-of-house console. Jones discusses controlling monitor levels during sound checks and live performances, and he comments on various instruments that are challenging to mix in live sound. He also stresses the importance of good communication between FOH mixers and the artists with whom they work.

Jones’ live sound mixing career spans decades and he has mixed with the world’s top musical performers. They discuss setting up an initial house mix, working with poor room acoustics and how techniques have changed for mixing on today’s linear, low-distortion PA systems. He also comments on mistakes he sees most frequently made by inexperienced FOH sound people.

Thomas outlines the complete power system renovation done at Stony Brook University’s Stony Brook Arena using a Lyntec RPC 342 panel equipped with multiple motorized breakers and networked control and monitoring capability. The system provides power for 45,000W of audio amplifiers and Daktronics displays in the arena.

He also discusses techniques used to hide wiring and use various objects in the museum exhibits as sound transducers.
