In this edition of the SVC Podcast, SVC Contributing Editor Bennett Liles continues his talk with Jeff Hansell, executive director of the Belmont Media Center, a public access, education and government (PEG) community TV station in Belmont, Mass., regarding the center’s use of the Broadcast Pix Slate 1000 system for studio productions and the Mica 500 integrated production system for local sports coverage on remotes. Hansell discusses the challenges of local sports coverage and training volunteer production people on the Broadcast Pix equipment and other gear.

Carlson and Pierson discuss their task of upgrading the sound system to handle small musical performances as well as lecture and group discussion events using Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC Live speaker arrays for the main house system.

Nelson discusses common production problems and video solutions for churches. He also takes us into the new features of the TriCaster 8000 production switcher which was described by Bob Haworth in part one after the Community of Christ Church gave it a test for one of their larger events. He also relates some of the history of the TriCaster models and provides more detail on ways to use the TriCaster 8000 “hotspot” feature.

Haworth oversees production for venue video, video on demand, and occasional live streams for the organization. He takes us through the setup for sound and video in the 5,700-seat facility as well as his use of a long line of various NewTek production video switching products.

The tour is complete with a look at the processing power these huge video files require and the challenges of producing and coordinating content that works on this new platform.
